Slab and footing scope should never share an unexplained material line. A slab quote needs its thickness, sub-base, forms, finish, and access assumptions; a continuous or isolated footing needs its width, depth, length, excavation, forms, and placement method. Add a documented allowance for waste, over-excavation, uneven subgrade, minimum-load charges, and difficult truck or pump access. Reinforcement deserves the same treatment: rebar, mesh, chairs, and their installation are explicit material and install lines, not a hidden premium folded into a per-yard number.

2. Price the mix-design adjustment separately

A 4000 or 5000 PSI specification is not simply a stronger label applied to the same recipe. Higher-strength concrete can require more cementitious material, a tighter water-to-cement ratio, controlled aggregate selection, and additional plant quality control. Those changes move the supplier’s material price and may change the placing window or finishing plan. Other high-strength or structural specifications should be treated the same way: confirm the selected mix with the supplier and carry its premium as part of the estimate.

Fiber-reinforced pours add a different kind of mix-design cost. Poly or steel fibers are a measured additive with a product, dosage, and handling requirement; they can change the batch price and the crew’s placement or finishing process even when the base PSI stays the same. Rapid-set, hot-weather, cold-weather, or other admixture choices likewise belong to the selected recipe, not to an unlabelled miscellaneous charge that appears after the truck is ordered.

Quote the selected mix as its own, readable decision: base concrete, PSI grade, aggregate or slump requirement, fiber or rapid-set override, and any other admixture should be traceable to the requested specification. A contractor can still present a simple total to the customer, but keeping the mix-design rows separate protects the margin when the specification changes and makes it possible to re-open the quote without rebuilding the recipe.

3. Add crew hours, equipment, and overhead markup

Labor starts before the first yard arrives. Estimate crew hours for layout and setup, forms or reinforcement, truck coordination, placement, screeding, finishing, cleanup, and the return trip for curing or control joints. Then adjust the crew plan for access and complexity: a chute-accessible residential slab, a pump-fed footing, and a tight commercial placement do not consume the same hours even when their yardage matches. Equipment is a cost center, not a footnote. Include pump or conveyor time, saws, screeds, compactors, forms, delivery or haul charges, and any standby exposure that comes from a narrow access window. Include curing materials and additives where the conditions call for them, because blankets, curing compound, retarder, accelerator, or a return visit can be the difference between a sound finish and an expensive callback. Keep markup, margin, and contingency distinct. Markup is the amount added to cost to reach a selling price; margin is the share of that selling price left after cost. A 20% markup on $10,000 of cost produces a $12,000 price, which is a 16.7% margin, not a 20% margin. Contingency is a deliberate allowance for defined uncertainty, such as hidden subgrade or uncertain access; it is not a second name for profit.
